Cervical cancer is a serious health concern affecting women globally, with Ireland having one of the highest rates in Europe. The good news is that early detection through regular cervical screening can prevent the development of cervical cancer. At Bath Avenue Medical Centre, we offer free cervical screening for all eligible women through Cervicalcheck, the National Cervical Screening Program.
Our Medical Team are highly skilled and experienced in conducting smear tests. They use the latest techniques and equipment to ensure that the screening process is quick, comfortable and accurate. Our aim is to make the screening process as easy and convenient as possible for our patients.
Cervical screening is recommended for women aged between 25 and 65 years. It involves taking a sample of cells from the cervix (neck of the womb) with a soft brush, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results of the screening are usually available within a few weeks. If any abnormalities are detected, further investigations or treatment may be required.
Successful Cervical Screening can accurately detect a problem years before it becomes a cancer, at a stage when it is treatable simply in a Doctor’s Office, and therefore Cervical Screening is both Disease Sparing, and Fertility Sparing, when used correctly.
At Bath Avenue Medical Centre, we understand that cervical screening can be a sensitive issue for some women. Our GPs are trained to provide a confidential and supportive environment during the screening process. They will take the time to answer any questions or concerns that you may have, and will ensure that you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure.
We believe that every woman should have access to regular cervical screening, regardless of their financial circumstances. That’s why we offer this service free of charge to eligible women. We encourage all women between the ages of 25 and 65 to book an appointment for a smear test, even if they have no symptoms or concerns.
Patients can additionally discuss the option of HPV vaccination during their appointment, which may provide additional security reassurance and protection against HPV related disease including cervical cancer, if appropriate.
For those with additional concerns, or where the timing of Cervicalcheck eligible appointments is inconvenient, we offer a full independent laboratory service for Cervical Screening at Bath Avenue Medical Centre. Ask our administrative team for details.
